COMPENSATION Douglas M. Chabries, David V. Anderson, Thomas G. Stockham, Jr., and Richard W. Christiansen Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah ABSTRACT A model is proposed which mathematically transforms an acoustic stimulus into a form which is believed to be more nearly related to that used by the auditory cortex to interpret the sound. The model is based upon recent research towards understanding the response of the human auditory system to sound stimuli. The motivation and approach in developing this model follow the philosophy pursued in the development of a similar model for the human visual system [1]. Application of this model to the problem of hearing compensation for impaired individuals is shown to yield a bank of bandpass lters each followed by a homomorphic multiplicative AGC. Clinical tests on hearing impaired subjects suggest that this approach is far superior to other current hearing compensation schemes. 1. A Process Model of the Human Auditory System Several treatments of the auditory system describe in detail the functioning of the ear [2], [3], [4], [5]. One particularly insightful discussion is provided by Lyon and Mead [6].

Effect of Age, Gender and Hearing Loss on the Degree of Discomfort Due to Tinnitus

Introduction: Tinnitus is one of the complex symptoms of hearing described as a phantom auditory sensation without any external stimulation. Due to the subjective nature of tinnitus, perception and discomfort of tinnitus vary among the patients. The main aim of this study is to investigate the effects of gender, age and the degree of hearing loss on discomfort due to tinnitus.  Methods: E...

Auditory Perception and Verbal Intelligibility in Children with Cochlear Implant, Hearing Aids and Normal Hearing

Objective: The aim of the present research was to compare the auditory perception and verbal intelligibility in children with cochlear implant, hearing aids and normal hearing. Methods: 60 children aged 5-7 years were divided to three groups and each group contained 20 children. The first and second groups were selected ordinarily from children with cochlear implant and hearing aids by conve...

Evaluation of Distortion and Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission in Tinnitus Patients with Normal Hearing

Introduction: Tinnitus is a perception of sound without external source. The exact etiology of tinnitus is not fully understood, although some researchers believe that the condition usually starts in the cochlea. The aim of this study was to determine the potential contribution of outer hair cell dysfunction to chronic tinnitus, by application of Distortion-Product Evoked Otoacoustic Emission (...

Auditory fMRI correlates of loudness perception for monaural and diotic stimulation

Loudness as the perceptual correlate of sound intensity is formed by some neural processing along the auditory pathway from the cochlea to the cortex. The loudness of a sound is largely determined by its level. Still, there are several other acoustical factors like stimulus bandwidth, duration, modulations, as well as personal factors like, e.g., the individual hearing status, that may affect p...

Effect of Vowel Auditory Training on the Speech-In-Noise Perception among Older Adults with Normal Hearing

Introduction: Aging reduces the ability to understand speech in noise. Hearing rehabilitation is one of the ways to help older people communicate effectively. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vowel auditory training on the improvement of speech-in-noise (SIN) perception among elderly listeners.   Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 36 elderly ...
